Every year, colleges around the U.S. confer close to 2 million bachelor’s degrees. While there are hundreds of possible majors to choose from, the majority of students tend to lean toward a select few for which their job prospects postgraduation are brighter. Here are the ones in particular toward which many undergrads gravitate, all of which have multiple career paths.

  • Business: In 2017-2018, over 364,000 graduates received degrees in Business. This discipline encompasses all of the facets of running a company, including accounting, finance, management, marketing, statistics, and human resources. If you go this route, you’ll learn about budgeting, communicating, sales theories, decision making, and so much more. Whether you want to be an entrepreneur or get in on the ground floor of a huge conglomerate and work your way up, this major will help you gain the right background to do it.
  • Healthcare Professions: After Business majors, programs related to healthcare, such as nursing, pre-med, and more are among the most popular choices for undergrads, with 216,000 degrees conferred in the 2017-2018 period. There’s good reason for this choice, too. Healthcare and medicine are rapidly growing fields and there are shortages of people entering this realm.
  • Social Sciences and History: There were 167,000 degrees conferred in the 2017-2018 period for this major, which includes government and political science. If you’re interested in public policy or foreign affairs, this is a good path to follow. Ditto if you are considering social work. You might also start off in this area if your long-term goals are to become a lawyer or even a journalist.
  • Psychology: Many undergrads seek to study this field and for good reason – the job opportunities are diverse. This major is a great segue not only into becoming a psychologist or therapist, but also social work, counseling, guidance, and any number of fields in which understanding the human condition is needed. It’s no wonder that 118,000 degrees in this major were conferred in 2017-2018.
  • Biology: Here’s a field that had 110,000 grads just 5 years ago and will likely see more in the coming years. Biology is often the prerequisite for medical school. However, there are many jobs in the biomedical field for which a bachelor’s degree can open doors.
  • Engineering: Another one of the STEM programs in which the job prospects are always plentiful. Chemical engineering, for example, has numerous career paths, from working with chemicals and petroleum to food and pharmaceuticals. Mechanical and electrical engineers are also in demand. In 2017-2018, there were 98,000 engineering degrees conferred between all of these disciplines.
  • Education: Even with 92,000 degrees conferred just five years ago, teaching is an area in which there is a shortage, especially in STEM programs.

There are other majors that are hot including computer science, communications, English, visual and performing arts, languages, and more. Find your passion, consider your opportunities and career path post-college, and go forth toward a wonderful future!
